Go To Therapy They Said...It'll Be Fun They Said

I have always been very in tune with my emotions; some would call me sensitive but I call it self-awareness. When I was younger, I thought that being “sensitive” was a bad thing. I was the one that always felt deeply; cried snot and tears when I felt inadequate or afraid, laughed so hard I’d throw up, overall I felt intensely which created confusion for me because I didn’t understand why I was the only one in my family that seemed to be on that same emotional level as me. After going through my first loss in 9thgrade, my mom decided it was best if I saw a psychologist. This started my therapy journey.
I’ve been in therapy for about 9 years now (On and off) but I didn’t start taking it seriously until I got to college and realized how confused I was with myself. In college is where I found a therapist I actually clicked with. She and I created a safe space for us to talk and get to know each other. She helped me become more aware of myself and emotions through meditation. She even gave me homework that led to me finding one of my FAVORITE authors/researchers, Brene Brown (she is a vulnerability QUEEN and has all the info on how shame and vulnerability can help you become your most true self)! Sessions with her made me start understanding why I feel the way I do when I do, and taught me that feeling THROUGH is the only way to get through tough times. This brought feelings of comfort within myself and my mind, not only helping me with myself confidence BUT it also really helped me when life brought me tough situations. Therapy gave me the coping skills, but more importantly for me, the COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE to know that I can and will overcome every tough situation the universe decides to throw my way.
I will say this, therapy didn’t make my problems or emotions magically disappear. It's an uncomfortable and sometimes painful process and makes you feel things you have been trying to ignore for YEARS...but it is so worth it! It gave me the power to have control over my OWN emotions. Think of it like studying for a test. Therapy is you preparing yourself for the big tests life brings you, so when they do come you know you can handle it!
